Leighton Fun Runners entered an open team, a mixed team and several solo runners in this year’s Greensand Ridge Relay held last weekend. The race organised by the South Midlands Orienteering Club follows 33 miles of the Greensand Ridge walk starting at Tiddenfoot Leisure Centre and finishing in the village of Northill, South East of Bedford. The six members of each team ran legs ranging from 3.9 to 8 miles in length along the trail, passing the baton at Stockgrove Park, Woburn, Millbrook, Deadman’s Hill and Deadman’s Cross. The event is set up by handicap against age and gender for each leg, with the aim of all the teams finishing at 5:00pm in Northill.
First off was Karrie Archer, Matt Mitchell, Glynn Raymen, Martin Addrison, and Verity Allsop followed later during the morning by Paul Douglas and finally Chris Taylor all running the whole distance solo! They were competing against 17 other entrants from around the region. Taylor put in an extraordinary performance finishing in second place (only losing out to Huw Lobb who is a world class athlete) and smashing his previous solo performance by almost 30 minutes completing the event in 4hrs 52mins! Archer and Allsop were the next LFR soloists to finish in a time of 5hr 44mins (10th place), followed by Addrison in 6hrs 1mins (12th place) and Raymen/Mitchell in 6hrs 28mins (13th/14th place). Douglas retired at the end of stage 5 due to fatigue. It was a fantastic effort by our solo runners as the conditions were hot and humid for running an off road ultra distance.
The Leighton Fun Runners teams were competing in the relay the challenge along with twenty eight other teams from the area. The Bounding Buzzards mixed team consisted of Neil Warby, Pam O'Connell, Andy Hully, Kerry Whitford, Anne Hully and Gary Reid completing the event in an overall time of 4hrs 49mins to take 22nd place overall. The Leighton Leaders open team consisted of David Throssell, Maxine Marshall, Mike Clark, Martin Walker, Stephen Ellerton and Bob Dunham crossing the finishing line an overall time of 4hrs 56min to finish 25th place.
The full team results were as follows:
Leg 1 David Throssell 5.6 miles in 48mins, Leg 2 Maxine Marshall 3.9 miles 51mins, Leg 3 Mike Clark 8 miles in 1hr:05mins, Leg 4 Martin Walker 5.7 miles in 49mins, Leg 5 Stephen Ellerton 5.5 miles in 41mins and Leg 6 Bob Dunham 4.7miles in 39mins.
Leg 1 Neil Warby 5.6 miles in 41mins, Leg 2 Pam O'Connell 3.9 miles in 43mins, Leg 3 Andy Hully 8 miles in 1hr:01mins, Leg 4 Kerry Whitford 5.7 miles in 53mins, Leg 5 Anne Hully 5.5 miles in 54mins, Leg 6 Gary Reid 4.7 miles in 35mins
