A great event and a lot of fun was had by all, despite rumours of wild animals and crazed staved wild men patrolling the woods hunting down nervous runners I’m very pleased to report that no-one got lost, got eaten or was kidnapped and sold into slavery, this running thing might be quite good fun after all :-)
Runs this week: Tuesday: Summer is here so it’s time to get away from the dreaded tarmac and out into the beautiful countryside J. Tuesday’s run is the 50 mins Out and back, south on the Canal towards Slapton. For the fantastically enthusiastic new runners amongst us this is a simple but highly effective run. Everyone takes the same route and runs as far as they can in 25 mins, then they turn round and follow the same route back to the club house. This means we all start and finish together and it’s ALMOST impossible to get lost. It also means that you can stretch your run beyond what you are used to without worrying about not managing a preset distance.
Thursday: The Speed and Stamina training continues under the watchful eye of our two fabulous but stern Iron ladies. 7:15 at the club house. This traininhg is very much based around your own abilities so there is no reason why everyone can’t participate. Sunday: The club is participating in the Cross Milton Keynes relay, much fun is anticipated with people getting lost in the woods, eaten by Bears and falling into the Canal. Photos and tales of hilarity to follow J. Dates for your Diary: 31st May: We have been invited to a social open evening run around Ashridge followed by a few beers. Looks like fun, add yourself to the FB event and come along for a fun evening out. 22nd June: Green Sand RidgeWay run: we have 6 teams entered for this event this year and we’re looking for a big club presence, please put your name down so that Verity can put together a some fun and some competitive teams for the event. For those who haven’t done this before it’s a team of 6 running a 33mile relay. We normally do some reccie runs so that no one gets lost on the day. A great day out. 21st July: John’s 100th Marathon. Yes you read that correctly John Kirwan will be completing his 100th Marathon at Fairland Valley Stevenage. http://www.fvspartans.org.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/FVS-2013-Race-Poster.gif There are 4 distances 12,18,26.2 & 30 miles. Let’s make an event of this and join John on his big day, choose a challenging distance for yourself sign up and make a club outing of it. Join John by accepting his invite on the FB page. May 12, 2013, 7:36 pm Hello Happy Runners, A fantastic fun evening at the AGM with many well deserved honours earned. Couch to 5K - Class 1/2013 Graduation The first Couch to 5K program of 2013 concluded on March 12th with a total of 32 new runners graduating after completing the 9 week program. The training program was hosted by Leighton Fun Runners in association with Leighton Buzzard Athletic Club, a first in the clubs history! A big thank you to all the coaches and helpers from both LFR and LBAC and a massive well done to all graduates:especially persevering through the often freezing temperatures. No doubt we shall be seeing some new faces at both clubs….. So take a moment to say hello and introduce yourself to one another
Here’s to the next C2-5K training program later on in the year; date to be advised - watch this space!! If you are a C2-5K graduate why not get in touch with the Clubs Press Officer, Jason Charley, and tell him about your experiences and challenges during your training. You could also tell him your plans for the future, your dreams and inspirations. For example Dee and Susan, front row right (I think their tops give them away!), are both planning on running their first Half Marathon later this year! C2-5K helper, Jane Crighton (voted Runner of the Month for March – WOW!!), started running with the club last November and ran her first Half Marathon (Milton Keynes) in March. What are you waiting for get writing! Chairman Tam likes to hear what the club runners are up to… it gives him a warm fuzzy feeling!
(Remember to follow a structured training plan and take advice from fellow runners/coaches before embracing a big challenge like a 10K or a Half Marathon -Train safe… Run Safe…. Injury Free)

Whatever you are doing guys I hope you are mellow and looking forward to your big day. Spectators let’s get a mountain of photographs of our great LFR team J. Runs this week: Tuesday Sees the club out on Crazy Claire’s Clever routes: 3 miles: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5633230 6.2 miles: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5769463 8.6 miles: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5769468 Thursday: The speed and stamina continues: Meet 7:15 at the club house, look for further postings on the actual route. Other News: As I’m quite confident you are already know the AGM is scheduled for Friday 10th May, make sure it’s in your diary and let the club know you are intending to attend by accepting the FB invite. Remember Max the club secretary (leightonfunrunners@gmail.com) is keenly awaiting the following information from you:
FB update: A small group of ladies within the club have started a male body appreciation society and shamelessly posted a nude male pictures on the club FB page. The 86 excited comments ensured that this naked man was the first thing to pop up everytime anyone glanced at our FB page. The LFR good taste subcommittee met and debated this shameless pornography for good taste and approved it as sexy enough (perhaps an all-female subcommittee was a mistake?). Frankly girls I don’t see why you are all so excited, that’s the image I see every morning in the mirror ;).
Happy running. Apr 14, 2013, 6:56 pm Hello Leighton Fun Runners, As you are doubtless aware the Club AGM is scheduled for the 10th May. This is an important annual event, not only is it an opportunity to have a social drink and laugh with your friends, it’s also an opportunity to applaud those that have excelled and won one of the coveted club prizes. The most important aspect of the AGM however is the opportunity to vote for the club committee for the coming year. LFR is very fortunate as it has a very effective and hard working committee (we aren’t a fantastic club by accident) and to ensure our continued success it is important that the right people are chosen. In preparation for this day there are several things ‘YOU’ as a club member ‘MUST’ do. Committee members: A quote from Karen Kirwan. “What the club needs is more young blood”, naturally I pouted for several weeks after that insensitive comment. But of course what Karen meant was that the success of the club depends upon a healthy turnover of fresh people, new ideas and renewed energy and this is undoubtedly the case. So I wish you all to consider the following committee roles (you’ll find the descriptions outlined on the club webpage) and consider the question “Who would be ideal for this role” and then ask them if they are happy to be nominated, you are allowed to nominate yourself. All nominations should be sent to the Club Secretary by 5pm Wednesday the 8th May and titled NOMINATIONS, at the AGM an open vote will occur from all nominated names. The Official Club Officers (as per the Constitution) are shown below, these MUST be filled.
Additionally the following roles are fulfilled from other committee members, they are not mandatory but extremely important for the effectively running of the club so please nominate for these positions also.
Please don’t be afraid to put names forward, there is no shame in not winning in an open vote, all positions are open to everyone and all positions are open to be challenged. To allow the full list of nominations to be published prior to the meeting it is important that all nominations are received by 5pm Wednesday the 8th of May. Agenda Items: If there is anything you wish to discuss at the AGM then details MUST be sent to the Club Secretary prior to the meeting so that an agenda can be circulated prior to the meeting. All proposed agenda items should be sent to the Club Secretary by 5pm Wednesday the 8th May and titled AGENDA. Club Charity: Every year the club adopts a charity to support. The charity needs to be local and needs to be approved by the Committee and voted on by the club membership. If you have a charity you wish to propose please send details to the club secretary for consideration, please include a description of the charity and the work they do. The final selection will then be voted on at the AGM. All Charity proposals should be sent to the Club Secretary by 5pm Wednesday the 8th May and titled CHARITY. Runner’s Runner: There are several awards on the evening, these are awarded by the committee/Captains/Chairman or points from races. There is an additional award nominated by the club membership, hence the “Runner’s Runner”. This can be anyone in the club and the selection criteria is entirely upto you, for example:
All award nominations should be sent to the Club Secretary by 5pm Wednesday the 8th May and titled RUNNER.
