New Members & Couch to 5k
At Leighton Fun Runners we appreciate it can be a daunting experience joining a new club, especially if you are new to running or have been away from it for some time. So let us tell you a bit about ourselves, and what we do, to make it as easy as possible for you to come along and join us.
Who Are We? Leighton Fun Runners are a friendly, local running club who welcome a wide range of runners of all abilities. We currently have 100+ members and meet regularly for fitness training and social events. Primarily we run on road, but our routes can often take us off road through local country parks or along the Grand Union Canal (which we find particularly enjoyable during the summer months).
Training Nights We have two core training sessions per week. On Tuesday evenings we meet at the Cricket Club, Bell Close (opposite Morrisons) at 7.15pm. On these evenings we enjoy runs in pace groups and with a choice of two distances, typically a 4mile short run and 6mile longer run. On the first Tuesday of every month, we run a shorter distance (sometimes incorporating speed work or a 5k sprint against the clock) and then meet back at the clubhouse for tea and cakes (all for a reasonable donation to our club charity).
Couch to 5k sessions January 2013 sees the start of the Leighton Fun Runners’ beginners’ sessions on Monday evenings that will be running for 9 weeks. It gives novice runners a chance to start a structured training system based on the “Couch-2-5k” programme pioneered in the USA and recommended by the NHS Live Well Initiative. The weekly sessions will begin on Monday 14th January 2013. Starting from outside the Cricket Club, Bell Close at 7.30pm, and the sessions will mix walking and running, designed as a safe and manageable start for your fitness routine. The course costs £10 and this will be donated to SERV, the charity that supplies volunteer motorbike riders to transport blood and organs around the country. http://www.justgiving.com/leightonfunrunners-c25k Couch to 5K is for everyone. Whether you’ve never run before, or if you want to get back into being more active, Couch to 5K is a cheap and easy way of getting fitter and more healthy. There are plenty of benefits from getting into running. For starters, it’s an easy way of improving your physical health. Running regularly will improve the health of your heart and lungs. It can also help you lose weight; especially if combined with a healthy diet. Perhaps the unexpected side-effects are the mental benefits of running. Taking on the challenge of Couch to 5K can help boost your confidence and self-belief, as you prove that you can set yourself a target and achieve a goal. The Couch to 5k is a great way to make new friends in a well established club with 100+ members. We have runners of all standards and no matter what your ability you will find great support and encouragement. We also have a full calendar of events including social outings, group runs and races. This is fourth time that the Leighton Fun Runners have run the programme and its success has encouraged novice runners to go on through the club to complete half marathons and even full marathons! You can find the programme we’ll be using at www.nhs.uk/livewell/c25k website and you can even download podcasts to help you through your training sessions.
