In Memory of Richard Gale - Under 10 Kings Win at Barton Rovers

Lewis, 10, wins Barton tournament in memory of dad

By Alan Manicom at the Reading Post
July 21, 2010

Lewis Gale helped his team win the Under-10s age group at the Barton Rovers six-a-side tournament in memory of his father.

Richard Gale died suddenly at the age of 39 and his son was desperate to honour him the day before Monday’s funeral at Easthampstead Park.

But the youngster feared Crusaders’ chances of lifting the trophy were over when he missed his spot-kick in a penalty shoot-out against Meadway in the quarter-finals.

The Warfield-based club, though, recovered to go through to the semi-finals where they beat Frimley Green 2-1.

And despite falling behind early on to Kennet Valley in the final, Crusaders hit back to seal victory with two goals by Michael Green.

Lewis, who was cheered on by his mum Ruth and brothers Stephen (18) and Jack (13), played a starring role for Crusaders.

The Hatch Warren schoolboy had an excellent tournament, switching between midfield and defence.

And watched by his team-mates, he went up to lift the club’s first trophy of the summer.

Mum Ruth, who also has a daughter Amelia (5), said: “He has been a brave boy and I am very proud of him.”

Manager Craig Ive added: “I am so pleased for Lewis and the rest of the boys. Lewis said he wanted to win a medal for his dad and he did. The whole team were superb.”
